Buford the Book Bus

A program of Austin ISD Library Media Services, Buford the Book Bus's mission is to keep students reading throughout the summer by providing free, high-interest books. See when Buford the Book Bus will be near you!

5 Book Dive

The 5 Book Dive is an Austin ISD summer reading program created in 2016. The purpose of the program is to encourage all students to read at least five self-selected books over the summer. Summer is a great time for students to relax with a book (or magazine, or comic, or whatever) and experience the pleasure of reading just for fun! And research has shown that reading just five books can protect students from a drop in reading levels known as the "summer slide", which disproportionately affects lower-income students (Alexander, Entwisle, & Olson, 2007; Kim, 2004).

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program 1st-6th grades

Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August.
